It was one of two mass shootings in the Chicago area alone on Monday. Less than 12 hours earlier, five people were injured in a shooting in Chicago’s South End.
The Highland Park shooting was notable for its scale (at least three dozen injured), its fatality (at least six dead), and its location, an affluent suburb not normally experiencing such violence. But it was part of a pattern: the brutal pervasiveness of gun violence in a nation with more guns than people.

The five victims, all men, were transported to local hospitals: a 17-year-old boy who was shot in the arm, a 19-year-old boy with leg injuries, a 24-year-old boy with knee and thigh injuries. . . , a 30-year-old boy was shot in the lower back and side, and a man of unknown age was shot in the leg, according to the Chicago Police Department. In Philadelphia, two police officers were shot near the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday evening. Both officers were transported to Jefferson University Hospital and are in stable condition, according to public information officials at the hospital.
